Truck export insurance: Dutch export plates for any vehicle above 3,500 kg

from €180 Including 2 white export plates

Our truck export insurance is for anyone driving a truck, tractor unit, bus or heavy van home from the Netherlands under its own power. We arrange it with two white Dutch export plates and the green card from €180, valid for 14 days, with a business invoice for your transport company.

Which vehicles fall under the truck rate

The truck rate applies to trucks and to every other vehicle above 3,500 kg: rigid trucks, tractor units, tippers, refrigerated trucks, box trucks, road sweepers, buses and coaches, heavy vans and chassis cabs. The rate group follows the vehicle type, which the green card shows as a category letter: C for a lorry or tractor unit, E for a bus, F for a trailer or semi-trailer. Within the rate, the empty weight and the year of manufacture set the exact price; we check both with the registration number. Semi-trailers and heavy trailers above 3,500 kg have their own Dutch registration and need their own policy: they also start at €180, with one white export plate. Send us both registration numbers and we will confirm the total for the combination.

As an RDW-recognised export company, we know the procedure for heavy vehicles too. It is the same as for a car: the vehicle is reported for export at the RDW, the Dutch registration ends, and you drive on white export plates with temporary export insurance and the green card. See the general explanation on the page about Dutch export plates with insurance.

Truck export plates and insurance: from €180 with 2 plates

Whether you call it a truck or a lorry, the price for any vehicle above 3,500 kg starts at €180, including two white Dutch export plates (one for a heavy trailer), the 14-day third-party liability insurance and the green card as a PDF by e-mail. Heavy vehicles differ a lot, so the exact price depends on the vehicle, its empty weight and its year of manufacture; we always confirm it before you pay. With delivery by DHL Express anywhere in Europe, the total starts at €230, including the €50 shipping surcharge. Online and at the office the price is the same; outside opening hours a higher rate may apply for appointments.

The RDW export deregistration is not part of this price. The seller or another RDW-recognised company can do it, or we can do it for €50 per vehicle at our office in Hengelo during opening hours, so a tractor unit and its semi-trailer cost €50 each. The truck itself does not have to make the trip to Hengelo: the person who visits us brings its Dutch number plates, its registration card with the tenaamstellingscode and a driving licence, identity card or passport. A deregistration outside office hours, or a remote one for which only the plates travel by post and the papers go by e-mail or WhatsApp, is charged at a higher rate; ask us for the amount. Once the vehicle has been reported for export, you receive the RDW export document. Also not included, and worth saying clearly to transport companies: tolls, vignettes, the registration and any taxes in the destination country. The price page lists all vehicle types.

For drivers and transport companies: how the request works

Transport companies usually send a driver to collect the vehicle. The policy is issued in one name, normally that of the buying company, and your driver may drive the vehicle on it. Send us the Dutch registration number, the company name with address and VAT number, the destination and the start date, and we will confirm the price and send the payment details. After payment the green card goes to the e-mail addresses you choose, for example the planner at the office and the driver on the road, and the plates are collected in Hengelo or delivered to the seller's yard or your depot.

A tip from experience: have the plates delivered to the seller a few days before the driver arrives, and make sure the driver has the green card printed and on their phone the evening before. That way the driver fits the plates, checks the documents and leaves without waiting. Use the online request form or WhatsApp.

Driving a heavy vehicle on Dutch export plates

The 14-day cover applies on Dutch and foreign roads in the EU and in all the other countries on the green card. Keep the green card, the RDW export document and the purchase invoice in the cab; heavy vehicles are often checked, for example at weigh stations and borders. The insurance is liability only: damage to the truck itself, its load or a trailer is not covered.

Like any truck on Dutch roads, the vehicle needs a valid APK. The driver needs a licence category that matches the vehicle, and the usual rules for professional drivers apply where relevant. Tolls and vignettes for heavy vehicles differ from country to country and are your responsibility; arrange them before departure to avoid delays on the way.

Planning the route home

Fourteen days leaves room for the daily driving-time limits of a heavy vehicle on most routes within Europe. Plan where the driver will rest and which countries you will cross. Long routes outside the EU are covered too: the green card is valid in Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Turkey, Ukraine, Moldova and the Western Balkans, including Serbia, among others. It does not cover Kosovo or Northern Cyprus, nor Russia, Belarus or Iran, where frontier insurance has to be bought at the border. Choose the start date so that the cover begins on the day the driver actually leaves the seller, and keep some days in reserve for the registration at home; if the trip takes longer, contact us before the end date, because in some cases the insurance can be extended. If the truck is going overseas by ship, the drive to a port such as Rotterdam or Antwerp can also be made on the export plates.

After arrival you register the vehicle at your national authority, which may involve a technical inspection, a registration deadline and taxes or duties; we do not arrange that part, and the official Your Europe page linked under this page explains the rules for EU countries.

Frequently asked questions

Can a professional driver collect the truck on my company's behalf with your export plates?

Yes, that is a common setup for transport companies. The policy is issued in your company's name, and other people, such as your driver, may drive the vehicle on it. The green card can be e-mailed to both the office and the driver, and the plates can be delivered to the seller or the depot where the driver starts. The driver carries the green card, the RDW export document and the purchase invoice.

Do I need export plates if the truck is transported on a low-loader?

No. A vehicle that is carried as cargo on a low-loader or in a container does not drive on public roads itself, so it does not need export plates or export insurance for the journey. The plates and the policy are only needed when the truck drives under its own power. If the truck is driven to the loading point first, that drive does need cover; ask us if you are unsure.

Is a tractor unit with a Dutch semi-trailer one vehicle or two?

Two. The tractor unit and the semi-trailer each have their own Dutch registration number, so each needs its own export plates and its own cover: from €180 for the tractor unit with two white plates, and from €180 for the semi-trailer with one. Send us both registration numbers and we will issue two policies with the same start date; by post, the plates for both travel in one shipment with a single €50 surcharge. If you buy the tractor unit only and hook up your own trailer from home, only the tractor unit needs our package.

Can I drive the truck through Germany on Dutch export plates?

Yes. Germany is in the EU, so it is always on the green card, and the white export plates are recognised there. Keep the green card and the RDW export document in the cab, because trucks are often checked. German truck tolls apply to heavy vehicles and are your responsibility; register for them before you enter, as you would with any truck.

Is a bus or coach also covered by the truck rate?

Yes. Buses and coaches are almost always above 3,500 kg, so the truck rate applies, from €180. On the green card they fall into category E, the bus category, and within the truck rate the empty weight and the year of manufacture decide the exact amount. You receive two white export plates, the 14-day liability insurance and the green card. Send us the Dutch registration number of the bus, your company details, the destination and the start date, and we will confirm the price.
